Is perfume toxic?

Updated: May 13, 2019

Did you know that everyday perfume is really bad for you? People have been using perfumes and colognes for decades but studies have shown that perfumes or fragrances are doing more damage to our bodies than good. TheraEssentials created a line of perfume and cologne roll-on’s that smell good and have great health benefits as well. We all want to smell nice without the side effects that come with chemical-laden perfumes.

Fragrance is in all of the daily products we use; cosmetics, cleaners, hair products, and lotions. The term “fragrance” on any product label is a term the FDA permits companies to use to represent a multitude of chemicals. FDA.gov explains it this way, “FDA requires the list of ingredients under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA). This law is not allowed to be used to force a company to tell “trade secrets.” Fragrance and flavor formulas are complex mixtures of many different natural and synthetic chemical ingredients, and they are the kinds of cosmetic components that are most likely to be “trade secrets.” To learn more, see the regulation on cosmetic ingredient labeling and the Federal Register notice for this regulation, which addresses “trade secrets” and the FPLA.”

The International Fragrance Association, an industry trade group, publishes an online “Transparency List” of about 3,100 stock chemical ingredients that are used in fragrance. These are all chemicals that we are not aware of in the products we buy and they are all very toxic.

Fragrances have been studied since the 1980s and have proven to have a large list of side effects. Headaches, skin irritation, allergies, asthma, respiratory problems, reproductive problems and can even cause cancer (source) to name a few. The list of the most harmful chemicals in fragrance are Phthalates, Parabens, Styrene, and Ethanol. Phthalates have been linked to male and female reproductive problems (source) and have been banned for use in many other countries. Parabens also have been shown to disrupt the reproductive system as they are estrogenic which means they mimic estrogen in the body disrupting the normal hormone function. (source)

According to the Breast Cancer Fund avoiding synthetic fragrance is one of the best ways to protect yourself. So how do we still smell great without all of the chemicals? Essential oils smell great and have huge health benefits. TheraEssentials has a new line of Perfume Roll-Ons for women and Cologne for men. The Fruit of the Spirit roll on has 9 different fragrances to choose from and the Men’s Cologne has 3. Discover the scent that ascends our health.
